4 reasons you should be covering your exterior garage door frame in aluminum

Thinking about making a change to your garage door? Why not have your garage door frame aluminum covered at the same time? It’s actually a great idea that will make maintenance of your garage door a piece of cake.

What type of aluminum should you use?

The aluminum used for this type of project is the same that is sold in rolls and used by companies that make exterior building components. The aluminum is bent using specialized equipment to the dimensions of your door frame.

You could buy the aluminum, take it to an aluminum dealer and have them bend it for you, but we suggest you approach the garage door specialist who will also install your new garage door.

Below are four reasons why cladding your garage door frame in aluminum is worthwhile.

You’ll have an (almost) maintenance-free door!

Aluminum doesn’t rust or fade and requires very little maintenance. It’s coated with baked-on paint and a protective layer that makes it very weather resistant. The only thing you’ll really need to do is wipe it down with soapy water every once in a while to keep it clean.

The wooden frame will last longer!

The aluminum cladding acts as a protective layer to the wooden frame. It will be protected from weather, and rotting.

The door frame will have a smooth appearance!

You can get a smooth seal between the aluminum and the other exterior components (i.e. the brick or exterior cladding of your house) by covering the joint between the frame weatherstripping and the exterior finish with a sealant that will stay flexible even in extremely cold temperatures.

It will look much nicer!

If your garage is at the front of your house, the garage door is likely the first thing people notice when they pull up outside (after all, they do account for approximately 30–40% of a house’s façade). If you don’t clad the door frame and you fall behind on maintenance, the first thing people are going to see is flaky paint, and that’s really not attractive. By cladding the door frame in aluminum, you’ll increase your curb appeal, which will help you sell your house more quickly (if it’s on the market).
