Does your garage pose a threat to your car?

Garage Door

If you park in your garage but also use it as storage, it’s likely that you don’t have a lot of room in there. So, how can you take care of your possessions and protect your car? It’s easy, read on to find out!

Parking safely

A crowded garage makes parking your car safely difficult.

While there are some high-tech options out there to help, you could do-it-yourself with a piece of string and a tennis ball. Simply attach the ball to the door, when the garage door opens the ball drops. When your pulling in and the ball hits your windshield, you’re in the right spot.

Another inexpensive option is using PVC parking mats that have two raised sections, once you feel you’ve gone over the first bump, you’ll know it’s time to stop.

But, if you’d rather spend some cash, you could invest in laser pointers. These lasers direct a beam towards the dashboard, when it hits a certain point you’ll know you’re in the right spot.

Protecting car doors

You might have got your car into the garage okay, but that doesn’t mean your doors are out of harm’s reach. A really simple, inexpensive option is to attach pool noodles along the wall to protect doors from slamming into the wall.

If you have a double garage door and want to protect your car doors from hitting another car, you can install pool noodles on a wooden post between the two cars.

How to protect car doors

Make sure your tools are secured to the walls, and take care not to overload shelving.

Be careful where you store your belongings, items that are simply leaning against the wall could easily be knocked over and damage your car. Try installing a pegboard! You also want to be careful not to overload shelves, vibrations from your vehicles could cause items to move over time and you don’t want a can of paint falling from a height onto your car.

Rodents…

As the temperature drops, rodents look for ways into warm places to snuggle up nice and cozy. It’s only natural, but that doesn’t mean you want them setting up shop in your garage! Make sure the weather-stripping around your garage door is in good condition and that you can’t see any holes – even tiny ones. Field mice can squeeze through nickel-sized holes!

If you don’t have an insulated garage but still store your car in there, you really need to take car as rodents will try and crawl into the hood of your car so they can keep warm near the motor – which of course, could cause serious damage! But there’s an inexpensive solution: Put mothballs in your garage. Rodents can’t stand the smell of them and will stay far away!

Road salt

Although this isn’t directly linked to your garage, road salt also causes considerable damage to cars as it is corrosive. Try and wash your car regularly to rid it of any residual road salt.
